全国校际甲组乒乓球赛的夺冠热门通常都是在莱佛士书院高中部与华侨中学高中部之间产生，然而，自2007年南洋初院男子乒乓队在半决赛中爆冷击败华中，夺得阔别了21年的亚军之后，"南初"的名字已深深地烙印在人们的心中，再一次证明了"黑马"是存在的。

Nanyang Junior College, conducted its second JC Experience Programme on Jan 6 and 7 so more than 200 students from 15 schools could try out JC life for themselves.
It is the only JC which conducts such a programme for students, since the rules were changed two years ago to have only a single intake of students.
This is Nanyang's way of competing with savvy polytechnics to attract students, as junior colleges are no longer the only or obvious choice for top students.
"Our aim is to help students make a more informed choice about tertiary studies," said Mr Wong Look Kwang, the teacher-in-charge.
Besides attending talks about the school's programmes and schedules, the students also tried out different sports offered as electives by the school.
About 50 students who attended the programme last year applied to join the college.
Although selected schools are invited to the programme, interested Secondary 4 students can register online on the college's website from mid-November.

THE Singapore Armed Forces will get a new chief when Lieutenant-General Desmond Kuek Bak Chye relinquishes his appointment in March.
Lt-Gen Kuek, 46, who has held the post since 2007, will be returning to the administrative service.
The current Chief of Army Major-General Neo Kian Hong, 46, will assume the appointment as the new Chief of Defence Force on March 31.
The changes are part of the continuing process of leadership renewal in the SAF, said the Ministry of Defence in a statement on Friday.
Since he enlisted in 1981, Lt-Gen Kuek has served the SAF 'with distinction' in appointments such as the Commanding Officer of the 41st Battalion Singapore Armoured Regiment, Mindef's Head of Defence Studies Department and Assistant Chief of the General Staff (Operations).
As the SAF chief, he led 'the SAF's transformation into a modernised, integrated and networked fighting force capable of carrying out a wider spectrum of operations', said Mindef.

三军总长郭木财中将今年3月31日退任，由陆军总长梁建鸿少将接任。三军参谋长陈振声准将则在同月26日出任陆军总长。军方将在上述日期分别举行交接仪式。
国防部说，郭木财中将卸任后将重返公共部门负责行政服务工作。
新加坡武装部队每三、四年改组领导层，因此这次“易帅”在意料之中。空军也在上月迎接新总长，由黄志明准将接替哥哥黄志勤少将出任空军总长。现任海军总长赵文良少将则是在2007年9月上任，任期未满。
